The Nature of News

Miles smiled at the faces arrayed along the conference table as Good Friday’s dawn glow was lost in the dark gray mist out the windows. Temperature was in the 50s, giving us a little shiver on the way in from the Parking Lot. There was no shivering for those who came down from the 6th floor transient suite. One thing was for sure. It is Easter weekend and Pastor fRank was ready to turn up the volume on his version of the Greatest Story Ever Told. That means a lot to the faithful in the Creative Section at Socotra House. With Ramadan just closing and Passover in Progress, we look to our roots in the history of the three Patriarchal Faiths.

That is where out Pastor waves celebrants out to the Section Sedan for the trip over to the Church trailer and Miles can get down to ordinary business not caught up in miracles.

You can see the amount of stuff he has to deal with since he has a slide displayed on the north end of the conference room.

“I was surprised by the Bondi thing,” he said with lips pursed. “But I suppose I should have nown this was coming. I was amazed that the cabinet looked like the Fox News lineup with her and SECWAR Hegseth and Judge Jeanine Pirro strutting around so photogenically. Instead of thinking about who is next on the block to be told to go home, we should think about what is actually going on. When he was swept back into office, Mr. Trump must have felt he needed to give his second administration a familiar face, and Fox was the way to show it. With the War- or “special operation” now in its month-long moment, it looks like the President is prepared to show a new and more assertive visage to an American electorate lurching toward a mid-term election in just seven months.”

He stood and walked to the front of the room and began to trace the arcs of the messaging and the way they streak across the sky. Som, like the one labeled “Epstein” ha long tails that reach across years. The Mid-Term arc will get bigger and bigger until it occupies the entire middle of the screen with bright light and pops of continuous fireworks/

The spiritual is in there as well. but Ramadan is done, Passover passing and Easter in two days.” He turned back to face the Booms, Zooms and Tweens who had made it to the nine o’clock meeting.

It is fascinating to see how the messaging works, since it is not intended to just tell the news. It is about creating it in a way to make us do something.

“I supposed that would be something amusing and topical to release as a morning story,” said Dierdre, looking over at Holly. “If you are running a little short i have a great recipe for an incredible Italian red sauce that can be tuned to all sorts of meals from a good afternoon in the big cast iron pot on the dual burner tactical stove.”

Miles smiled. “I think we can close this element out as a philosophic exercise in the nature of news, the purpose of it, and whether we can turn this title slide into a Daily logo that could show rising and setting stars, the moon phase, small craft warnings and the other stuff that actually reflect life here in our Fifteen Minute Counties. It could be fun.”

The faces down the table looked dubious, since just talking about the news doesn’t actually make any sense out of it. And of course, that isn’t what the nature of the news actually is, you know?
