Peak Bloom

It’s today! At least that is what Mike Litterst says, and he is the most respected bureaucrat in the District in his position as Communications Director for the National Mall and National Park Spokesman. His hat alone gives his declaration some authority. Mike says it is happening now, or rather shortly after lunch today.
We need to be precise on the stages of The Big Bloom. To recount, they are:
Stage 1: Green Bud
Stage 2: Florets Visible
Stage 3: Extension of Florets
Stage 4: Peduncle Elongation
Stage 5: Puffy Blossoms: WE ARE HERE!
Stage 6: Peak Bloom right after lunch!
OPTIONAL Day tippling approved in commemoration of Mother Nature’s Miracle!
Those stages have been happening here in the Tidal Basin on this day- the 26th of March- since 1912.

What began with a gift of trees from Japan at the Tidal Basin in 1912 now spans four weeks in Washington, DC,
The kick off was March 18, a little early but honoring Stage 1 development. A burst of warm weather last week sped up the bloom after our crazy winter brought a freeze that threatened delays. Act now to see the peak this afternoon! Depending on wind and weather the peak can last 3-7 days. But act while you can!
Today looks like the best viewing day of this season- sunny, highs in the 70s!
We hope to see you down at the Basin, or at the BloomFest 2026 opening tomorrow down at the Basin. We understand Mike will be there with answers to any questions! Vic claims he will have answers to this one:
