Pie Day & Winter Storm Warning

It may be National Baked Crusty Goodness day, celebrated since the mid-1970s, but about half the US population is the path of the winter storm. It starts today in Texas and reaches us up here in the Northeast by Sunday. You can see the lead edge heading direct at the North End of the Conference Tabe. Whoomp.
A potentially record-breaking cold snap is forecast to follow, with frigid temperatures and a solid crust of ice lingering into next week for as many as 240 million Americans.
Parts of Oklahoma could see over a foot of snow as the system brings ice and sleet to Jackson, Mississippi, which has no city-owned snowplows. Meanwhile, wind chills could plunge as low minus 35 degrees in Chicago and Des Moines, Iowa, today, prompting school closures and day drinking across the Mid West.

The Meteorologists on Fox 5 are warning that damage could rival that of a hurricane, with heavy ice threatening power lines as people contend with subfreezing temperatures. Several Governors have proactively declared emergencies yesterday; a precautionary action that recalls the power grid failure during a winter storm that struck Texas in 2021 and caused over 200 deaths.
Why is this happening? A shift in the polar vortex has caused a tight cold funnel fueled by relatively warmer Arctic temperatures, is colliding with moisture from off California and the US southern coast. Whammo.
You can see the big black mass that will drag itself toward the Conference Room on the 4th deck of the Trillium HQ of Socotra House. Accordingly, Section Leader Miles thinks the internal forecast should result in the Galley being held open for emergency beverage services Saturday afternoon through Monday evening, when the vortex should be offshore.
We will keep you posted on how it goes, but we stand ready to deal with National Pie Day however it occurs, creamy and crunchy or smothered in icy cold, depending on whether the pie is coming direct from the Fridge or warm and tasty from the oven.
Remember. Charlie Papazian would like us to have a memorable time with it, since after he sold the rights to his birthday to the American Pie Council in 1986, he went into craft beer brewing as a pioneer brewer. We will follow his example and keep the beer nice and cold. We will pair that with the Pecan Pie, based on the recipe of Melissa’s mom, plucked nice and cozy warm from the stove.
We may do it again on March 14th (3.14), which is Albert Einstein’s birthday, warm or cold.
