Pi Day, (3.14), Old Charts, and Moving Dirt

Arlington / Socotra House
PI DAY! 3.14
Pi Day began in 1988, when physicist Larry Shaw organized the first celebration at the Exploratorium Science Museum in San Francisco.

The date — March 14 (3.14) — honors the mathematical constant π, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Its digits continue infinitely without repeating, a number that mathematicians have chased now into trillions of decimal places.

At Socotra House, the observance is less theoretical.

Holly is helping Dierdre bring out pecan and cherry pies for the crew, which may be the most practical interpretation of Pi Day yet devised. Mugs of Flat Yank Coffee appear with plates piled high with pastries. The mathematics of the moment becomes simple division.

Pie disappears at a predictable rate.

KHARG ISLAND

Far from Fairfax, in the Strait of Hormuz, lies Kharg Island, the principal export terminal of Iran’s oil infrastructure.

Some of the Older Salts around this table remember studying maps like these nearly half a century ago, when Phantom crews calculated long over-water routes and contingency strike plans that lived only in briefing rooms and notebooks.
The missions that were never flown.

The charts were that folded away in the racks by the galley door.

History, however, has a habit of circling back.
The aviators who fly such missions today are younger than the planners who once imagined them.

The maps remain.
Only the generations change.

SPRING IS SPRINGING
Closer to home, Arlington is changing again.

Along Columbia Pike, eight-story office buildings that once defined the corridor are coming down. Across from The Trillium, demolition crews are clearing parking lots and aging commercial structures that no longer fit the county’s plans for the area.

In their place will rise condominiums and mixed-use buildings, part of a long effort to transform office districts into neighborhoods that people can actually live in.

The machines are running.
The dirt is moving.

Spring construction season has begun.

Socotra House
Coffee. Pie. Old charts on the table.

And outside, Arlington rearranging itself once again.
