Doctor’s Orders

(DR. Anthony Fauci (L) and that Institute Currently In The News (CITN) (R).
Did you follow this one yesterday? A career CIA analyst was trundled up in front of a Congressional panel to see if Doctor Tony Fauci participated in a cover-up of laboratory work he had funded at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China as part of the response to the Covid Virus. So, this is partly a tale of Doctor’s Orders, and how the Hippocratic Oath can be applied to make tough decisions on matters agreed to by non-health professionals in some capital far away.
Let’s save time this pleasant morning. It is unusual to actually know this for a fact. It is not analytic speculation or conspiracy theories because Dr Fauci revealed it himself to me and four or five other members of the SARS-2 Task Force at our last meeting at the chartered by Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson in 2003.
The circumstances were a bit unusual, since I had been a generally well-mannered and successful bureaucrat in this River town for twenty years. I have mentioned this curious career event before when it was appropriate to do so. All I can honestly claim is this: I was among the people Doctor Fauci assured that he ‘had it covered’ regarding continuation of the SARS research effort. At the time, in those circles, it did not strike me as particularly mysterious or controversial. The assumption among many involved was simply that the necessary work would continue somewhere.
So, with the little swirl of news up on the Hill yesterday, it appeared sufficient only to assault Doctor Fauci’s hubris and credentials.
We were assured everything was OK some 23 years ago, and Doctor Fauci’s necessary research was apparently accomplished, along with everything that followed.
I claim no specific epidemiologic expertise, but I was a government agent specializing in classified matters for nearly thirty years. As part of a special mission for the Department Secretary, I briefly had admission to the decision level of HHS policy. Doctor Fauci told us he had it covered 23 years ago. Beyond that, I can only describe the atmosphere and assumptions that existed among those present at the time.
So, if you prefer the view from one former CIA officer who happened to be in the room, I simply wanted to note that none of this felt particularly secretive among the insiders who routinely did what Washington insiders do: pursue what they regarded as necessary research whether the larger public understood it or not. One thing is certain: the research deemed necessary was pursued somewhere, by someone, under Doctor’s Orders.
