15-Minutes Counties

There is a bunch of stuff going on here in Fairfax and Arlington Counties where Socotra House has two small campus areas. There is talk a Casino might be in the planning stages out in Fairfax where the Boomers are concentrated due to their need for better medical care and closer VABC outlets. You can imagine the reactions of having a swarm of inebriated gamblers driving in for a big parking lot, cheap drinks and flashy games.

The county most of us know is Arlington, with people who worked the Pentagon, New York Avenue downtown and The Hill. Before that, Vic had had attempted to raise a family on his return from almost six years in Hawaii, two years in Japan and a 14-month one-year-tour in the Republic of Korea.

He and his bride purchased a little place as close in as they could afford in the Kings Park development in Fairfax. As tour piled up, they moved across Braddock Road to a nicer place with a better High School just a mile or two north. That worked, but he wound up on his ample butt back close to the Potomac as he concluded his military days. The Zoomers, GenX andZ, are down there with a little hopping around. This is what their life is like now:

We have talked a lot about Arlington but need to open this up to include the central feature in our 15-minute counties, which we now include as a sort of 30-minute radius since the main office is across the line and sits in the middle of what was a 14 story office complex surrounded by 20 acres of plain black parking.

Which is really the story of everything here. The mushrooming growth of the Federal Government reached out as the Vietnam War raged. It hurled up office complexes to attract earnest workers. The National Auto Dealers World Headquarters is in the news now that the White House has approved internal combustion cars.

Like they had when all this expansion started.

Which is where we are going to have to leave it today. But you can trust Vic, this story is only now unfolding to accommodate Scooters, Pedestrians and Small Cars now that they have pulled the plug on the EVs.

They actually make sense if you are restricted to fifteen minute transits on small wheels. But then they would be golf carts, not cars.

More on that, Manana!
