That sentiment was expressed as an urban planning tool that showed up a split-generation ago. It held that modern living should be oriented toward neighborhoods that hold everything necessary within a fifteen-minute walk, or a scooter ride. They had commenced putting three-and-four story vertical additions on some of the little Cape Cod houses purchased for a couple dozen bundles of thousands of dollars when new.

Before they put decimal points in the prices.

Miles was still thinking about that in terms of the range of the Fire Horse Zodiac sign when the room went quiet.

Miles is our Creative section Leader because he has been known to think when the situation required Fifteen Minutes of hard thinking when the world either behaves or doesn’t.

It works when power is local, friction is visible, and the news arrives at walking speed.

But if China decides to strike Taiwan as part of a Maduro abduction retaliation—not to occupy it, but to demonstrate that America is no longer the uncontested number one on that block—the scale changes instantly. Not from county to country, but from minutes to time zones.

That wouldn’t be a failure of 15-Minute County living. It would be its proof, since Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo and Pyongyang are all spinning around at 17,000 miles an hour in a dozen time zones west of the two time zones in wnich we are most comfortable walking around. It is about determination.

And that ability to re-frame our mobility is essential, because the moment the frame breaks, the story doesn’t end. It widens.

That’s when the next book begins. These days, with the abduction of the Maduro clan, we find some of us flying west out of here and across the Pacific pond to balance the oil an drugs and cash. Accordingly, we are left with something between a dozen and 15 Time Zones to cover with the same two legs or single scooter.

Which would take us a far as Ho Chi Minh City if we needed to get there. You never can really tell, you know? We believe the other 11 time zones can handle something that looks like night when the darkness comes.

Same voice.

Same people.

Different dawn.

Just darker and no longer pretending the entire world fits in a quarter-hour walk. Or a 13 hour jet ride above the waves. It is complicated. There are 24 of those pesky things, you know?
