Different reasons for getting out there, different footwear, and a remarkable amount of energy expended before some of us have reached the office.

The river divides the District from Virginia, though the two remain locked in an intimate embrace. Bridges carry the commuters, the arguments and, this morning, the Marine Corps Marathon. There are days when the whole place seems to be in motion.

Yesterday’s soundtrack came from Turnstile, the Baltimore band whose name we have now successfully learned to spell. “Turnstyle” sounded plausible, but apparently the musicians have a preference.

Their free Washington Monument concert brought hardcore punk, crowd surfing and humanitarian fundraising to the Mall. Gaza, Sudan and Lebanon were among the causes behind the gathering.

The Washington Post reported an estimated 60,000 attendees, according to organizers. That is a substantial audience for anything, particularly something involving people voluntarily colliding with one another.

Our opening compilation brings the musicians and the crowd together beneath the monument. There is even an orange character flexing in the foreground. Washington can still supply a scene that requires very little embellishment.

The band’s current roster includes Brendan Yates, Franz Lyons, Daniel Fang, Pat McCrory and Meg Mills. Their roots are in Baltimore, with the overlapping Washington and Maryland music scenes helping explain why a concert beside a national landmark could also feel like a homecoming.

Meanwhile, the wider world continues to compete for attention. We keep looking for signs that Ukraine’s horror might approach a pause—or something resembling those generational pauses between reorganizations of Mittel Europ, this morning, the Marine Corps Marathon. Hope is easier to announce than an end to the killing.

The First Lady is getting some of the spotlight, while the President’s voice sounds worn by his campaigning marathon. The energy required for that alone is something to contemplate over coffee.

Then there was football. Indiana beat Michigan in overtime at the Big House, ending a drought there stretching back to 1967. “A gazillion years” was our first formulation. The actual date is quite sufficient for those of us with Michigan loyalties.

All this under what feels like the nicest fall in recent memory. We intend to appreciate that portion of the proceedings.

And the cookbook? That is a separate story, even if we managed to stir the two together this morning.

Deirdre honchoed our effort to examine, without particular bias, how our cookbooks—and a fair amount of our culture—get made. Recipes travel. Names and credits sometimes travel with them. Sometimes they get separated along the way.

We will return to the question of how recipes associated with Chef Pierre Franey wound up in Pow Wow Chow when Vic gets the seafood together to try the dish.

It needn’t turn into another French and Indian War. We would have to add numbers.

www.vicsocotra.com

Photos: Farrah Skeiky/For The Washington Post. Collage: Vic Socotra. Morning!
