Next year it is going to happen almost the direct middle of our two NoVA Fifteen Minute Counties. It is 13 minutes from the old HQ in Arlington, and 17 minutes from the new spread out in transformational Tysons 2!

The Big News has the flavor of an Old Penny and memories of old mining towns far away: Copper Valley Grill is coming to McClean, with an opening next year.

There is something wonderful about a new restaurant coming to town, particularly when it brings a little history, a reputation for good food, and the promise that we might not have to drive halfway to Baltimore to enjoy it. Not that some of us are driving any more. But that factor accounts for me having to plan expeditions rather than just getting up, going to the elevator and going down to launch in my old GLK350 to the world.

Here at Socotra House, we have spent a surprising amount of time thinking about geography lately. Our familiar operating territory consists of Arlington County and, once again, Fairfax County. It is a world measured less in miles than in the fifteen minutes it takes to get somewhere when the traffic lights are feeling charitable.

Then we pulled up the regional map:

Good heavens! You can see an entire civilization out there with the Beltway stretching across to Fairfax to Baltimore and the Chesapeake Bay. It is roughly fifty times the size of the little patch of Northern Virginia in which we conduct most of our daily business.

And now, happily, a piece of that larger culinary world is apparently coming to us.

Glenwood Restaurant’s Copper Valley Grill brand is headed for Mc Lean, and supposed to open next Fall. We intend to use the launch as a case study in real property, construction and sub-construction, staffing and restaurant management.

Which is where the money is going to be in having humans serve humans in the next generation, doing the things AI can’t.

Like smile.

For the Socotra crew, that is not simply restaurant news. It is a welcome addition to the local food landscape, where an ordinary lunch can turn into a gathering, a good dinner can become a tradition, and somebody else gets to wash the pots.

The Galley crew is naturally interested. Holly and I have been managing the logistics of feeding our irregular little watch sections, Rocket has been exploring the possibilities of accelerated cooking technology, and Splash has been keeping their respective protein departments in operation.

But there are days when the best recipe in the world consists of a menu, a comfortable chair, and a professional kitchen willing to do the work. With the frequent feeding program, I can sell this as an out-sourcing option to my regular Cheaten’ recipes by just having a licensed driver bring the van around to the front of the Trillium!

Welcome to the neighborhood, Copper Valley! We are looking forward to seeing what you bring to the table. We will be following the construction, staffing and opening with interest. We may attempt to get some of our Intern crew orientation jobs to help orchestrate the new Skilled Trades Degree Program Miles is negotiating to open as a degree-granting alternative to the old four-year college track that is falling apart all around us.

The really big news that no one is talking about with the election hysteria? The family unit in America is under assault by the collapse in social norms that is producing high school alleged graduates who cannot read. In a nation of we used to be quite proud.

We already have a great Steak House down at the Corner here in Tysons in The Palm, but it is pricey and used if there is someone important in town. But we have heard about the Calamari appetizer at The Copper Grill. And we may take you across the River to see what is coming here next year!

The new restaurant is planned to have approximately 170 seats, a patio, private dining, live entertainment and an extensive wine display. Construction is expected in early 2027, with opening targeted for fall 2027. We will keep you posted on how this goes as a de facto-private-private partnership that will help get high school students to not only learn their ABCs but be ready to spell calimari with a nice zesty crisp!

Glenwood’s is scheduled to open in fall 2027 at Chesterbrook Shopping Center, 6224 Old Dominion Drive, McLean. We do not yet know if they will plaster the Copper Valley Grill sign over the door for a location of about 170 seats with a patio, private dining and nightly entertainment.

We will have to wait for confirmation that the new restaurant will offer the Woodfire Dining Club, but its Maryland sister restaurants already do. The trip from the Trillium at Boro Place over to Chesterbrook is a piece of cake, with a sedate back way unmarked by Cops or Flock, And it is a short local drive rather than a trip across the River to Maryland.

And that is the happy ending to this little restaurant story. There is a gathering of the Boomer crowd from the days they all washed up here in Washington in the Cold War and start of the GWOT. We are going to have the Boomers shower and get dressed up for transport to a safe adult gathering facility and discuss whether the Woodfire Club at a New Copper Valley locations might become the next official institution of the Socotra Galley.

And, if you had not already absorbed it, provide a chance for Socotra House to institutionalize our course entrees for certification in something like NoVA restaurant management across markets and generations. We think there is a way to generate cash across the various spending points.

We are growing in NoVA- and not just as a Publishing House. Nor as a University, or course. But with AI and some Alumni Affliations from Michigan, MSU and Harvard, we are forwarding a new Universal Skilled Trades Credentialing Institution- Socotra Universality- here on the banks of the brown Potomac River! Plus, we have a Steak Shack right up the block!

Imagine the pitch: two years of fun inside the Beltway with real Pundits and real stories and real food and a credential that says we claim you have been to the White House Press Pool Waiting Room!

Copyright 2026 Vic Socotra
www.vicsocotra.com

And something Exciting is coming to SOCOTRA!
