The Academic Shop was wrestling with a 24-month curriculum for interns who can produce morning and afternoon stories, provided somebody tells them what to go look at. This was an easy assignment: look up.

SpaceX launched its Starship from Starbase at about 8:48 a.m. Eastern. The Super Heavy booster carried it through the heavy air on the power of 33 Raptor engines; six more engines on the ship took over after separation. For the first time in the program, Starship entered Earth orbit. It also sent 26 Starlink satellites on their way. That is a substantial morning’s work for a machine still being tested.

There were complications. One engine on the ship shut down early during ascent, and the mission ended well before the nearly ten hours and six orbits originally planned. Controllers brought Starship back after roughly three hours; it reentered and splashed down in the Pacific. The booster returned to Gulf waters off Starbase rather than the launch tower. No one got to watch the giant arms catch it.

On the other hand, the launch, separation, orbital insertion and satellite deployment gave the engineers a considerable list of things that worked.

That is what caught our attention around the table. For much of our seventy years of space adventure, enormous and intricate machines were built for a single ride. We stacked components beneath a capsule, threw most of them away, and brought the people home with whatever remained attached to them. Reusable spacecraft and booster landings have already begun changing that arithmetic.

StarshipX pushes the idea further: a large transportation system designed, eventually, to fly again and again.

There is still a distance between an ocean splashdown and a vehicle that can be inspected, refueled and sent back up to orbit. Pan Am clipper, ready to fly across the broad Pacific. Can we do a similar schedule to the Moon and Mars? What we are seeing now is similar to what our grandparents might have thought about a Pan Am Clipper fueling up for a flight across the broad Pacific.

There is a much greater distance between Earth orbit and SpaceX carrying boots to Mars.

Yesterday did not close either gap. It did show a ship reaching orbit with a working load aboard, delivering the payload as planned while the people who built it learned from the rough edges of the flight.

Our interns might take that as a model for the afternoon story. Ask what happened, distinguish the flight plan from the flight, and keep the larger ambition in view. Then bring it back to the Conference Room, where the breakfast crowd can argue about Mars while Deirdre decides what can be made from what is already in the freezer. Both enterprises start by taking inventory. We feel like we have done that a few hundred times!

Copyright 2026 Vic Socotra
www.vicsocotra.com

Yesterday morning, the Fourth Floor Conference Room at the Trillium had a day shift, a couple of breakfast munchers and what remains of our Aerospace Department watching a very large object leave Texas.
