We won’t know for a while exactly how this astonishing piece of combat airmanship occurred only this morning and a half the globe away. The passenger who is said to have crashed the cockpit door is meeting the PM of Israel now.<\/p>\n
What we know is incomplete, so we will only attempt to capture what the breaking news is reporting so far. In this case, it appears that one of two crewman on a Fly Dubai scheduled flight from the Emirate to Tel Aviv in Israel attempted to seize control of of the jet. Intent was apparently to plow it with the 186 passengers into something significant in the Jewish Homeland.<\/p>\n
There was a tangled account of a fight in the cockpit, a wounding, and a heroic act in which the cockpit hatch was sprung open, permitting passengers who mobilized to attack the cockpit door shouting Hebrew slogans and overcoming the traitorous crewman. I<\/p>\n
In the conflict, the aircraft departed normal flight and plunged some 14,000 feet in altitude in under two minutes, briefly exceeding the speed of sound by nearly a hundred MPH.<\/p>\n
More importantly, another crew was aboard, dead-heading on the flight heading out and amid the conflict were able to gain the pilot’s seat and secure control of the aircraft. They landed successfully in Saudi Arabia to regroup before completing the original route.<\/p>\n
There will be more, of course. But suffice it to say this, here and now:<\/p>\n
There are heroes who live among us. We should recognize how fortunate
\nwe are to share this world with them.
