\u201cOperation Argument\u201d was the name of the military operation launched by the United States Army Air Forces, supported by the Royal Air Force\u2019s Bomber Command, against Nazi Germany in February 1944. Airplanes loaded with high explosives were supposed to demonstrate the gravity of the discussion.<\/p>\n
The big argument in progress then, the biggest ever, was about whether Europe would be unified under the wise leadership of a Central European power. It still is.<\/p>\n
The objective in 1944 was to destroy German aircraft factories and defeat Hitler\u2019s air forces before the Operation Overlord landings in Normandy. The scale of the Argument was sufficient to earn the campaign another name: \u201cBig Week.\u201d The fury of the bombing was just that.<\/p>\n
Big.<\/p>\n
Like the week of diplomacy unfolding in New York City. It is a big one!<\/p>\n
The meeting between Mayor Mamdani and the President was the highlight of yesterday. Their apparently cordial discussion offered a little relief from the argument that may be resolved in 42 days over at our polling place in North Fairfax.<\/p>\n
The Anglo-American bombing campaign against Germany sounds rather distant now, with the European Union dangling something like \u201cassociate membership\u201d before Canada as Prime Minister Carney scuffles with President Trump over trade and tariffs.<\/p>\n
With the United Nations General Assembly meeting this week, there will be a lot to talk about. Mr. Trump is doing it right now, outlining his views on how the world should work and who should stop fighting whom in the two major conflicts now being played out in the 21st century.<\/p>\n
We are hoping the President has a Big Week. With world leaders gathered in New York, he will have plenty of opportunities to hold court in this world through which he parades under pillars of grandeur with us.<\/p>\n
It could be a Big Week.<\/p>\n
We could use one.<\/p>\n
