We got the day pretty much shut down after Happy Hour. The Spartan fans here were relaxed, still enjoying their victory over the Toledo Rockets last Friday. We called them the Mudhens, back when they were a moment in the Fall season.<\/p>\n
The Michigan Wolverines, ranked No. 16 in the preseason polls, were probably still reeling from the abrupt departure of former head coach Sherrone Moore. He was fired before Christmas last year after what was described as \u201ccredible evidence of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.\u201d
\nWith all the other controversy in the NCAA about eligibility, transfers and cash payments, the turmoil in the front office doubtless left elements of a proud program in a certain amount of disarray as the Wolverines went into an unusual season opener that did not feature blue skies above the Big House.<\/p>\n
Instead, more than 110,000 fans filled the biggest oval in the Midwest for an evening kickoff, and the three M-GO-BLUE! fans here at Socotra House had the flatscreen primed and ready in the Conference Room with their third drinks of the evening.<\/p>\n
Just a quick note, in case you have not been a prisoner of Big Ten coverage for the last sixty or seventy years: Western is a good school with a solid football program. They can never be taken lightly.<\/p>\n
That showed across virtually the entire game.<\/p>\n
With one second remaining, Western Michigan led 12\u20136.<\/p>\n
One second.<\/p>\n
Michigan had the football and one final chance.<\/p>\n
Then things changed.<\/p>\n
Bryce Underwood heaved the ball downfield. JJ Buchanan came down with it 47 yards later in the end zone.<\/p>\n
Touchdown.<\/p>\n
Michigan 13, Western Michigan 12.<\/p>\n
You may see some of the carnage surrounding that last second of the game. There is conflict, of course, and respect for the young men who played on both sides. Whether the Peacock Clock used by the television people was more accurate than the one the officials had will probably be discussed for years.<\/p>\n
But in the meantime, the Wolverines can put a \u201cW\u201d in the first column for the season\u2014we think– and have a pretty good idea about what is going to be coming next.<\/p>\n
As our Vic observed last night, a little solemn and wobbly after a busy holiday:<\/p>\n
\u201cM! Go Blue!\u201d<\/p>\n
There was some other stuff going on in this world, but we did not have time to get to it!<\/p>\n
