This was an unexpected and tough morning we were not expecting until the end of the week. We we will not spend a lot of time describing the emotions that poured out of the little Alexa radio in the cube farm just down the passageway from the elevators and the Galley\/Conference Room complex. Management likes to pipe in a mix of local, national and BBC coverage where work is supposed to start during weekdays by the day-staffers and the more relaxed watch crews around the clock the rest of the week.<\/p>\n
We had retired with the gentle Good Feelings about Labor, which we did, mostly, and the mellow feelings from a traditional American holiday that suddenly and violently turned into the shock of well-remembered buildings bursting into flames with brokers plunging to the streets a hundred stories below.<\/p>\n
Shocking.<\/p>\n
There was a later morning meeting at Langley that occurred while the planes were hitting New York and people began to move, to get away from places that might be targets and seeing the face of the Pentagon blown in below where one of our offices used to be, burning and collapsing.<\/p>\n
The discussions of yesterday, and the touch of grace bestowed by the holiday on our Blue Collar tradition of work and skilled trades lingered into a morning of memory, building to the ceremonies on Friday.<\/p>\n
It is interesting to see High School grads now realizing welders, plumbers and electricians now are among the best paid entry workers and have only trade school bills and zero college loans!<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, even our historic public art seems to be jogging into new positions and places. That giant rectangular blue sculpture that has been jogging over on the Kennedy Center Grounds? It suddenly flew last week, up from its concrete base and making an un-announced move that sums up precisely how we all felt 25 years ago.<\/p>\n
As you may recall, the ceiling fell in on the Kennedy Main foyer in the recent storm, so we completely understand how artist Joel Shapiro’s object d\u2019art might be feeling all alone out there on the green grass grounds after dangling from the crane.<\/p>\n
The dispute about necessary repairs to the JFK structure adds to the general Fifteen Minute County hysteria about names, elections, arches and rehabilitation to our National Civic Homestead.<\/p>\n
But don\u2019t be alarmed, fellow citizens! Former Kennedy Center chair David Rubenstein purchased the blue Runner from whatever entity owned it for $2 million and change. He intends to have it displayed over at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden across from the Archives this Fall.<\/p>\n
It will be running blue in view over there until we redecorate the capital again.<\/p>\n
Or given the memories of this pleasant sunny fall day a quarter century ago, someone else does.<\/p>\n
Unless, of course, we keep an eye on the things running around here!<\/p>\n
