\nThe Conference Table has been getting crowded, lately. It was making the Dance-Off crowded and a little confused. This afternoon we have drifted into a severe thunderstorm alert that will last nearly through the eclipse tonight, so we may miss that part of tonight’s show, though we may have other things to watch out the big window.
\nFor years the view was principally occupied by Boomers who had accumulated enough airplanes, ships, wars, marriages, careers and assorted adventures to believe they had probably seen most of what life intended to throw at them.<\/p>\n

That assumption has not aged particularly well.<\/p>\n

The world keeps producing new material.<\/p>\n

There are wars and elections, tankers squeezing through the Strait of Hormuz, eclipses moving silently across continents and another football season preparing to consume otherwise sensible people.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the younger crowd has been arriving at the table.<\/p>\n

Some came to Washington to make a difference. Others arrived through engineering, cyber, communications or the Galley. Behind them came the interns, hovering around the edges, watching how the machinery works and occasionally discovering that nobody else knows exactly how it works either.<\/p>\n

And now there is another generation.<\/p>\n

Vic’s two little granddaughters from San Diego arrived in company with their Detroit cousin, the nine-year-old serving as senior escort, guide and apparent tactical commander.<\/p>\n

The three girls surveyed the Boomers.<\/p>\n

They considered the Zoomers.<\/p>\n

They passed the interns.<\/p>\n

Then they spotted Holly’s platter.<\/p>\n

That established the actual chain of command.<\/p>\n

There was something reassuring about the view from this end of the table. One generation accumulates the stories. Another takes over some of the work. Another watches and learns.<\/p>\n

The youngest simply reaches forward.<\/p>\n

But another image on the screens this morning reminded us that generations are not always granted such an orderly passage.<\/p>\n

The extraordinary flooding in Nepal brought pictures of water, mud and debris sweeping through communities beneath the Himalayas, while rescue crews searched and families waited for word about the missing.<\/p>\n

There wasn’t anything clever to say about that.<\/p>\n

So amid our talk of moons, elections, Hormuz, football and grandchildren, we paused for the families whose tables will have empty places, and for those still searching.<\/p>\n

\nThen the world continued doing what it does.<\/p>\n

Ships moved through Hormuz.<\/p>\n

The moon crossed the sky.<\/p>\n

The children reached across the table.<\/p>\n

And another generation moved forward.<\/p>\n

More tomorrow, if we are fortunate!<\/p>\n
