Morning, Gentle Readers! Pastor Frank here to provide a Sunday Word for the Gentle Readership at Socotra House!<\/p>\n

Miles asked me to try to integrate some of the various messaging streams in the news this week. One of them had The Boys out on the South Patio making all sorts of noise last night.<\/p>\n

Major League Baseball had a new and scintillating record set.<\/p>\n

I am still a little in awe of what Joshua B\u00e1ez of the St. Louis Cardinals accomplished to announce his arrival in the Big Leagues. He made history by hitting three home runs in his Major League debut, becoming the first player ever to do so.<\/p>\n

Three home runs is remarkable. To do it in sequence in your first appearance is a stunning accomplishment, and one we voted to celebrate in this season of wonders.<\/p>\n

Managing meals and drinks through the carnival of merriment and solemnity has been stressful on the logistics.<\/p>\n

Deirdre has been attempting to keep everyone happy while we monitor two major wars, the Independence celebration, the FIFA World Cup, Grand Prix racing coming to the National Mall and, just beyond it, the somber arrival of the 25th anniversary of the horror of 9\/11 that is sometimes still looking over our shoulders.<\/p>\n

Much of the attention will naturally be in Manhattan, but some of us were at the Pentagon that morning\u2014the one on which the world changed here in Washington.<\/p>\n

I will be brief in my remarks this morning, since there is aircraft-carrier news that helps highlight just how extraordinary this season has become.<\/p>\n

News from USS Abraham Lincoln includes reports of sailors going over the side amid concern about the extraordinary length and strain of the deployment. George Washington is racing out to relieve her, while Washington is also talking about changes to the configuration of ships operating thousands of nautical miles from home.<\/p>\n

Rocket mentioned that, for a moment just after the Grand Prix next weekend, we could have three aircraft carriers on station. That prompted the inevitable Conference Table speculation about what else might be happening in the region as we approach September.<\/p>\n

And September brings us back around to 9\/11.<\/p>\n

So we mentioned yesterday that things are not over for this tumultuous summer.<\/p>\n

There could be a lot more on the way.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Deirdre has been working on another sort of readiness problem: keeping everyone fed, watered and reasonably cheerful while the screens continue flashing.<\/p>\n

I need to go prepare my remarks for the Sunday Word. Deirdre is working on the Cantarito cocktails, so I intend to keep my words insightful, reverential\u2014and brief.<\/p>\n

Now, here is what Dee has been working on in the Galley:<\/p>\n

\u201cHi, Thirsty Readers! Cantarito is a diminutive of the Spanish word for pitcher, c\u00e1ntaro. The cantarito is a small earthenware clay jug associated with Jalisco, the Mexican state where tequila is produced. The c\u00e1ntaro was once used for gathering and storing water; the smaller version is now most often a vessel for tequila and other drinks.”<\/p>\n

\n\u201cYou can always use a Collins glass, but I like having the little clay cups. They help keep things cool in our August heat\u2014and besides, they look right sitting in the middle of the Conference Table.\u201d<\/p>\n
