Section Leader Miles came back from his mental-health break to discover that the news had not taken one.<\/p>\n
Deirdre had made fritters that morning, which at least suggested civilization remained possible. Coffee was hot. The midterms were approaching. And somewhere between those two reassuring facts sat a war that increasingly seemed capable of writing the American political calendar rather than merely appearing on it.<\/p>\n
The immediate question was Tehran.<\/p>\n
The hard core of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard appeared to be consolidating power around the machinery of the state, with Ahmad Vahidi increasingly emblematic of the new order. That isn’t merely our impression: outside assessments have described the IRGC as becoming the decisive force in Iranian decision-making, while reporting this spring found Guard commanders assuming wartime authority once exercised by the Supreme Leader.<\/p>\n
And Vahidi has the look for the part.<\/p>\n
Not theatrical. Not triumphant. A hard, watchful face belonging to a man who appears to understand that surviving the first act sometimes gives you ownership of the second. Recent analysis likewise describes Vahidi and his circle as exercising substantial influence over Iran’s military response, negotiating policy and strategic decisions.<\/p>\n
Miles thought there was an uncomfortable historical echo here.<\/p>\n
Japan, at the end.<\/p>\n
Not because Iran is Japan, or because history repeats itself neatly. It doesn’t. But sometimes wars arrive at a point where the political structure that began them can no longer produce the resolution necessary to end them. Something has to break, consolidate, surrender\u2014or become sufficiently exhausted that yesterday’s impossibility becomes tomorrow morning’s agreement.<\/p>\n
The dangerous part is what happens between those two moments.<\/p>\n
And America has its own clock running.<\/p>\n
The November midterms are moving steadily toward the foreground while Hormuz, oil, sanctions and the possibility of renewed military action remain unresolved. Iran is still demanding major American concessions before reopening the Strait, while Washington is presently emphasizing economic pressure rather than another immediate offensive.<\/p>\n
So the war may lead the news into the midterms.<\/p>\n
But Miles wondered whether that was even the important part.<\/p>\n
The more consequential question might be whether whatever is necessary to resolve this war will look acceptable to Americans contemplating what comes next.<\/p>\n
History occasionally provides endings.<\/p>\n
It is considerably less generous about providing comfortable ones.<\/p>\n
Miles looked down at the morning production from Deirdre\u2019s kitchen.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrittering Time Away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nCorn, zucchini, peppers, hot oil\u2014and instructions considerably clearer than anything coming out of Washington or Tehran.<\/p>\n
Gather ingredients. Combine. Stir. Fry until golden.<\/p>\n
If only wars came with directions.<\/p>\n
Deirdre served the fritters.<\/p>\n
Miles went back to the news.<\/p>\n
