Reddig, design director for the Kelvinator Company, has constructed a “Rogue’s Galley” to which even the owner’s girl friends may be summoned by pushbutton.

The hexagonal structure, which suggests a lazy bachelor’s heaven, was unveiled yesterday during the International Home Furnishings Show at Chicago’s National Design Center. The occasion was a birthday party for Kelvinator.

The home appliance manufacturer is a division of American Motors Corporation and last year started professionals with its first line of pop art refrigerators.

Then the goal was to prompt homemakers into considering refrigerators for areas other than kitchens — dens, studies and game rooms, family rooms and even living rooms. This year the idea was to make them think, as Mr. Reddig contends, that appliances could significantly change people’s lives, if appliances themselves changed their shapes.

The experimental ideas that Kelvinator translated into the hexagonal structure as a forecast of tomorrow include the following:

A cooking center under a handcrafted copper hood combining the romance of an open wood-burning fireplace with the built-in convenience of an electronic oven, a charcoal hibachi, and flip-over grill.
An electronically controlled communications center that will give out stock quotations and report news events as well as release instructions from a recipe file or any other personalized data.
A multipurpose “tea-cart” which cools refreshments for ice and glasses and hot trays for hors d’oeuvre or canapés.
A refrigerator-freezer built horizontally into a wall behind an abstract painting that is a drop lid that opens down to become a work table. An air curtain will keep the temperature steady when the panel is open.
A tip-out sink that remains out of sight until summoned for use at the tip of a finger.
The day table in this arrangement not only telescopes with the aid of a hydraulic pedestal from cocktail to dining height, but also folds out, exposing a compartment for relishes and a section for chilling wine or champagne. Bottles are stored conveniently and cooled electronically underneath a carpeted platform. The table base has been equipped with a custom sound system to play records and tapes that are stored under a floor ledge.

“My children inspired many of the ideas,” said Mr. Reddig, a Pratt and Stephens Institute graduate. “Now that they have watched men come to life, James Bond is not quite so big anymore. In fact to them and to me he seems quite probable.”

Copyright 1966 New York Times

www.vicsocotra.com

05/06/1966 Has Hi-Fi Recipe File!
