So, if you want to get technical, today is Independence Day. We know, we know. This is not an excuse to skip the Production Meeting or do anything actually enjoyable on this Heat Dome Holiday.<\/p>\n
We don’t know precisely what the weather was like in Virginia for their holiday week long ago. We do know what John Adams thought about things just up the road in Philadelphia, though it was a little harder to get there without I-95. He wrote his wife Abigail to describe the backdrop for the Second Continental Congress: “We have been sweltering here, for a great Number of days together, under the scalding Wrath of the Dog Star. So severe a Spell of Heat has scarcely been known these twenty Years. The Air of the City has been like the fierce Breath of an hot oven.”<\/p>\n
It seems to evokes our swelter today under bright blue skies. We hope it was nice, but they might not have recognized it. If John Adams were alive today, he would tell you July 2. Other Founders would say July 4, the day that is currently recognized as a federal holiday by our national government. And still, other Founders would say, \u201cWhat Independence Day?\u201d since the holiday wasn\u2019t widely celebrated until many of the Founders had passed away.<\/p>\n
Here is the evidence, so you can decide which Independence Day is the real Independence Day!<\/p>\n
Officially, the Continental Congress declared its freedom from Great Britain on July 2, 1776, when it voted to approve a resolution submitted by delegate Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, declaring: \u201cThat these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.\u201d<\/p>\n
John Adams thought July 2 would be marked as a national holiday for generations to come:<\/p>\n
\u201c[Independence Day] will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival\u2026 It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade with shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this continent to the other from this Time forward forever more,\u201d Adams wrote.<\/p>\n
The return of a dome of hot air is unusual when Congress is not in session here, but will accept the warmth and beauty after the clouds that covered last week. If our current dome lingers, it may make the promised fireworks on the other 4th of July something to recall!<\/p>\n
We include the below graphic without further amplification just to demonstrate the scope of the event swirling around in the memes and messaging. We will not include anything about the other minor event which occurred on the 2nd.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Men’s National ‘Football’ Team advanced beyond Bosnia-Herzgovina to the Round of Sixteen. It is not an unprecedented accomplishment, but like the heat John Adams described, it has been more than two decades since they have done so well. The international fans who have arrived on our shores are an entertaining and merry bunch, and there is certainly all sorts of magic flying around and today it sure seems like the good stuff.<\/p>\n
In the meantime, we are going to skip the Conference Room today and just relax under The Dome!<\/p>\n
