OK- this is an exciting morning! Holly and I are organizing the summer pantry for impromptu BBQ’s and shift-change mass buffets. We have the place to ourselves due to the international situation. Our Section leader miles is off playing with his old Maritime Patrol shipmates and The Boys are part of our conspiracy to get ready for summer, regardless of what is going on overseas. We understand there were elections held in a variety of locations around the country, two of them in California where all of us have spent some pleasant time.<\/p>\n

Voting went on without apparent incident and we heard a great nickname for the current mayor of Los Angeles,<\/p>\n

Which is Bass-Ackwards to how the balloting turned up. Incumbent Mayor Bass came in two points ahead of challenger Pratt in early returns. Socialist city council member Nithya Raman managed a 20% showing. None of the three got more than 50%, so Bass and Pratt will advance to the General Election in November dragging on across the BBQ season.<\/p>\n

The only candidate to whom our group has actually contributed cash is that crazy British immigrant Steve Hilton, who we think will be a suitable replacement to Governor Gaven Newsom. Those of The Boys with hair will continue to use his styling gel. Hilton doesn’t need it. With slightly more than half of votes counted. Last night, vote counts disappeared into the California machine and Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra led a field of more than five dozen candidates in the appropriately-named Jungle Primary.<\/p>\n

While the race is still too close to call, billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer is at 20% and won’t concede while Sheriff Chad Bianco with 11% has not commented. Only the top two vote getters in California’s “jungle primary” will advance to the general election in November, so you can slice and dice the other dozen people who got votes and see if either Hilton or Becerra can crack a clear majority. We will see if the situation gets any clearer as the week goes on.<\/p>\n

What is getting clearer is the pantry situation. Socotra House has two chest freezers parked in front of the Company SUV down in the Parking Garage. I like to filll them up on a quarterly basis and draw down across the 270 meals for a dozen people I am supposed to be responsible for. My sources include the fine folks out in Wyoming for their beef. I used to shop for large selections of steaks, roasts and ground beef. I discovered I could still do that precision shopping a little closer to the Socotra House HQ at the Organic Butcher of McLean, which is only a nine minute walk from our building.<\/p>\n

So, that is our precision shopping if the Chairman wants to put on some special for guests, but our bulk source across the country is the Wyoming Pure Bulk Beef purchase. Let me tell you about the vision:<\/p>\n

As a general strategy, I try to have one large beef dish that The Boys can grill on the Russell Cooktop or in the Weber grill outside. My Original Crock Pot 8 Quart slow cookers also work to have something going, slowly all through the week and have the gentle odors flavor the work place with comfort. That gives me a steady layer of well-cooked ingredients on which I can work my magic. I use the left overs from big production beef meetings minced fine to contribute to an industrial-size batch of Chili and some pasta dish manages to get us through the weekdays and everyone is more relaxed on the weekends, so I can get by with bratwurst on the grill with nice baguettes and melted cheddar or rich brie.<\/p>\n

That brings us to the matter at hand. There was alarming news that the stock management cycle out west had sold out the full, half and quarter lots of fresh product. What is available now is 1\/8 quarters, which is not quite a quarterly allotment, but is something I can manage. The thinking is about next Spring when I can negotiate for a whole cow. I will need another freezer, so I will keep you posted on how Joyce and I manage the invoices to look like something reasonable.<\/p>\n

A certain amount of grit is required to stay on top of the stocks and keep order in the Galley. I take a certain inspiration from both of the Kings, the ones who inspired the Rex Entertainment Enterprise. You can attribute the vitality and vision of the Ranch Captain Richard King carved out of the Texas countryside. The contribution of the couple was balanced. His bride Henrietta outlived him by a half century, and it was her energy that continued the growth of the place to be larger than the state of Rhode Island.<\/p>\n
