The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) approved the arch design- whew- so Miles assigned Vic to bring you up to speed on what is going on over by where some of our remains will spend eternity. He immediately conned Keith into doing it and I got to type.<\/p>\n
So, for Vapor, Rocket, Splash, Miles, Vic and The Shore Patrol, we wanted to let them know that landscaping for the next few Millennia are taken care of, as will be the controversial 250-foot triumphal arch to be built where LBJ’s wife Lady Bird used to plant flowers near Arlington National Cemetery.<\/p>\n
The news of that event is sort of dramatic. There was controversy about this one as there is for anything in this town. In this one, the design was slightly revised to remove the proposed ground-level lion statues. This was a modest big deal since Miles had envisioned a tablet of himself with one of the Simbas to grace the inner entrance here at The Trillium..<\/p>\n
Despite the messaging, there is more to come on how our view of eternity is shaping up. Next is the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) meeting on 04 June to focus on urban land use issues. They only get a nod on design and control no funding.<\/p>\n
NCPC is reportedly packed with Administration appointees determined to implement a plan to place heroic new monuments around the capital in keeping with the 250th celebration.<\/p>\n
The next one on that agenda may be completion of the original plan of Pierre L\u2019Enfant That will be the new triumphant arch over on the Anacostia River approach to what is, for this moment, the most powerful city on this planet.<\/p>\n
Key details regarding our view of eternity:<\/p>\n
Design Specs: Granite arch is modeled on the one in Paris, but will stand 250 feet tall, topped with a Lady Liberty-style statue and two gilded eagles. Captions: “One Nation Under God” & “Liberty and Justice for All” inscribed in gold.
\nLocation: It is planned for the busy traffic circle at Lady Bird Johnson Park on the west bank of the Potomac. Vic used to turn right there, going north, to cross the Potomac River on the Memorial Bridge during his eight years of daily jogs from the Pentagon to the Lincoln Memorial. And back on the east side of the Big River!
\nThe Approval Process: CFA green-lit the project despite some public opposition. The project still faces legal challenges.
