– Arrias<\/p>\n

Two years of war in the cold and mud,<\/p>\n

Two years, no end in sight.<\/p>\n

Two years and more they\u2019ve fought and died,<\/p>\n

Sometimes it\u2019s not clear who\u2019s wrong, who\u2019s right.<\/p>\n

Mostly they fight for survival,<\/p>\n

Just hold this piece of ground,<\/p>\n

Day in, day out, no rest,<\/p>\n

Artillery continues to pound.<\/p>\n

Politicians argue, \u201cMust not quit,\u201d<\/p>\n

As they dance their elaborate ballet,<\/p>\n

Talk of next month or next year,<\/p>\n

In the trenches – just worry about today.<\/p>\n

Live through this afternoon,<\/p>\n

Live through this damned barrage,<\/p>\n

Let tomorrow take care of tomorrow,<\/p>\n

That future is just a mirage.<\/p>\n

Just make it through the next 15 minutes,<\/p>\n

Then a cup of coffee with your pal,<\/p>\n

Then a nap in this cold, damp trench,<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the limit of rationale.<\/p>\n

Fighting for the man beside you,<\/p>\n

For a cup of coffee and a warm cot,<\/p>\n

The rest of the world is too far away,<\/p>\n

And has mostly been forgot.<\/p>\n

That world is just a fantasy,<\/p>\n

The trenches are all that\u2019s real,<\/p>\n

The war may last forever,
\nAnd this land may never heal.<\/p>\n
