Editor’s Note: These eyes started looking at me on the Secretary’s hallway at the Department of Health and Human Services. She hung by the elevator bank on the 4th Floor as “Sky Girl,” and helped us focus on the SARS-1 epidemic twenty years ago. The one where Dr. Tony Fauci told us that “quarantine” could really harm the economy, and that he would continue gain of function research on the virus overseas. We found a way for Sky Girl to be safe on The Farm where she looks at us each morning…<\/p>\n

Her Eyes<\/p>\n
I can see her still as she turned,
\nOne last look on a wet, gray night,
\nAs I headed back to the ship,
\nThere she stood under a dim street light.<\/p>\n
I know she smiled, in that warm rain,
\nHer eyes crinkling just so,
\nI would hold her, kiss her if I could,
\nBut I had the duty, I had to go.<\/p>\n
Nod to the Cox\u2019n, Board the launch,
\nOne last look ere we shove off,
\nIs that her there under the bougainvillea?
\nI\u2019m sure I can hear her laugh.<\/p>\n
Her tinkling laugh, those warm brown eyes,
\nHer body next to mine,
\nSoft and warm, the sweetest lips,
\nSweeter than the sweetest wine\u2026<\/p>\n
Was she real or just a dream,
\nJust a nautical fantasy?
\nSomething all men dream about,
\nAfter a bit too long at sea?<\/p>\n
No, she was more than that,
\nShe was more real than any ship,
\nThat look in her eyes as we danced,
\nThe sinuous sway of her hip.<\/p>\n
Eyes that said she loved me,
\nFull of love and care,
\nEyes overflowing with desire,
\nEyes that did our passion declare.<\/p>\n
We had danced all through the night,
\nAnd slept all through the day,
\nShe fed me mangos and grilled some fish,
\nAnd we idled our time away.<\/p>\n
But now \u2019tis done, time to leave,
\nBack to the ship, back to sea,
\nI\u2019ll guard this memory all my life,
\nI know she’ll remember me.<\/p>\n
Perhaps some day we\u2019ll meet again,
\nFor this I can hope and pray,
\nThe future is an unknown country,
\nWhat happens there only God can say.<\/p>\n
Slip the mooring before dawn,
\nOuter marker by sun rise,
\nAnd back to station, back on guard,
\nBut in my mind her eyes, her eyes.<\/p>\n
