Author’s Note: My muse hit me on the head on the way home last Sunday, and I stopped and wrote down one line and then continued on home and lost the string\u2026 it popped back in this morning\u2026<\/p>\n

Sitting With a Shipmate<\/p>\n

Sitting with an old shipmate,
\nWe\u2019ve a long-treasured past,
\nSorting through some old sea chests,
\nFour decades \u2018round the mast.<\/p>\n

Six continents and seven seas,
\nAround and around we went,
\nForgotten trophies of forgotten wars,
\nBut it was a life well spent!<\/p>\n

Paintings, knives, a cutlass or two,
\nA Pirate\u2019s vest, Scarves of silk,
\nTrinkets from a hundred ports,
\nSome memories as sweet as mother\u2019s milk.<\/p>\n

Bottles shared, a game of chance,
\nA fistfight in a tavern,
\nA long ago swim in the Red Sea,
\nStealing into some sheikh\u2019s desert cavern.<\/p>\n

A few things of value, many baubles,
\nA favorite rifle, a well built pistol,
\nAn old, issued blanket, a faded shirt,
\nInexpensive and now broken crystal.<\/p>\n

But the stories attached to each,
\nLong days and longer nights,
\nCrises and wars, standing watch,
\nAnd from the bridge – dawn\u2019s first light.<\/p>\n

And so a thousand little trinkets,
\nBut the memories that they hold,
\nFriendships more precious than rarest gems,
\nPriceless memories that can never be sold.<\/p>\n
