Plutarch of the Piedmont<\/p>\n
Land once surveyed by Washington,
\nPatrick Henry passed this way,
\nFarm land rich and lush,
\nFought for by Blue and Gray.<\/p>\n
His ancestors had a hand in building it,
\nHelped lay down the iron rail,
\nIn his youth he defended it,
\nNow he preserves it in detail.<\/p>\n
He recounts the lives of those before,
\nWho labored to build this land,
\nHe preserves their legacy,
\nAnd draws out a silver strand.<\/p>\n
A silver strand that few see,
\nBut which connects us to those lives,
\nHe preserves their stories,
\nAnd ensures the memory survives.<\/p>\n
The lives of key Americans,
\nMen many would otherwise not know,
\nLike a great historian of old,
\nFrom his pen do their lives now flow.<\/p>\n
With wit and humor and elan,
\nHe gives us what we need and want,
\nA man of erudition and charm,
\nHe is the Plutarch of the Piedmont.<\/p>\n
High Plains Cato<\/p>\n
Each day he toils to instruct,
\nTo point out wrong from right,
\nSo that we might better know our path,
\nWhen to laugh and when to fight.<\/p>\n
In his youth he sailed and fought,
\nNow he works and tries to teach,
\nWe the lucky understand,
\nAnd are thankful for his reach.<\/p>\n
Like a Republican of old,
\nWho defended Roman law,
\nHe slices through politicians\u2019 babble,
\nTo find their every flaw.<\/p>\n
And at the same time,
\nHe tells us of our land,
\nOf the mighty western plains,
\nOf Rocky Mountains grand.<\/p>\n
Thus he builds a dialogue
\nThat like some Ariadne\u2019s ribbons,
\nWill help to explain our current travails,
\nA source for a future Gibbons.<\/p>\n
Garden Spider<\/p>\n
Here in my rose garden,
\nShe hangs by a thin thread,
\nShe spins her clever web,
\nMore nasty bugs might be dead!<\/p>\n
I hope she builds a mighty web,
\nCatches fly after fly,
\nRight in front of my window,
\nI\u2019ll watch the little buggers die.<\/p>\n
Too darn many horse flies,
\nNasty, nasty bites!
\nNeed a few more garden spiders,
\nTo help set things right.<\/p>\n
So spin you labyrinthine web,
\nCatch lots of nasty bugs!
\nI am grateful for your presence,
\nBut please, I want no hugs!<\/p>\n
