There will be cheerful chaos over the next few weeks around the front Fire Ring, new steel roofing and the joy of summer construction. A Supreme Court in controversy about the nature of life and votes and firearms in a government apparently at war with itself. Other stuff? A new book project is funded and underway&#8230;135 days to an Election that will drive change in fundamental ways. Arrias greets this brilliant morning with the realization that &#8220;food&#8221; will be a rising issue, even here in the breadbasket of the world. Those members of the Writer&#8217;s Section will try to keep it all in account. But for the start of this, we will take our usual places and watch the blue tarps being spread across the deck, husky men swinging hammers and leveraging pry-bars&#8230;yammering en espagnol- life goes on in challenging times&#8230;in Virginia&#8217;s Proud Piedmont!<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Vic<\/p>\n<p>Author&#8217;s note: My Muse has been thinking about Ukraine and grain and things\u2026Probably too much!<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Arrias<\/p>\n<p>Arrias and His Muse: The Land<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicsocotra.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/arrias_muse1.png\" width=\"214\" height=\"288\" \/>Warm and humid, fog hugs the trees,<br \/>\nA woodpecker hammers away,<br \/>\nFresh turned soil, the smell of rain,<br \/>\nA quiet start to a new day.<\/p>\n<p>The grass is growing, the corn knee high,<br \/>\nUnder a window the flowers still bloom,<br \/>\nThe land calls, the farmers answer,<br \/>\nFood for the whole world to consume.<\/p>\n<p>But across the sea war rages,<br \/>\nThe call of empire lures a tyrant on,<br \/>\nAnd further away another plots,<br \/>\nWho will be our Don John?<\/p>\n<p>In a great capital a tired and angry old man,<br \/>\nSurrounded by sycophants and liars,<br \/>\nCaters to a few power-hungry elites,<br \/>\nFeeding their very earthly desires.<\/p>\n<p>War grinds on, we know not its end,<br \/>\nIt seems to grow as with a life all its own,<br \/>\nWhile in China an evil emperor,<br \/>\nDreams of an even greater throne.<\/p>\n<p>Around the world there is fear of famine,<br \/>\nWhile good soil lies unused,<br \/>\nControlled by bureaucrats with too much power,<br \/>\nThey care not if the poor are abused.<\/p>\n<p>But the farmers do what they do,<br \/>\nWhile the effete scoff and condemn,<br \/>\nElite pols and staffers created these problems,<br \/>\nWhy do we listen to them?<\/p>\n<p>There are answers all around us,<br \/>\nBut power has its own logic,<br \/>\nThe \u201celite\u201d just want to rule,<br \/>\nThey don\u2019t care if their rule is tragic.<\/p>\n<p>The problems all seem to be growing,<br \/>\nBut not the product of Olympian Fate\u2019s visions,<br \/>\nThese problems have a source,<br \/>\nThe unholy consequence of evil decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Can we step back from the brink,<br \/>\nCan our nation and the world be saved?<br \/>\nOr do we face a future of ruin,<br \/>\nSpecial people in castles, and a world enslaved?<\/p>\n<p>God alone knows the answer,<br \/>\nBut it requires no clever saw,<br \/>\nSimply throw the old bums out,<br \/>\nAnd return to the rule of law.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the farmers keep farming,<br \/>\nProducing a bountiful harvest of grains,<br \/>\nIgnore addle-brain academicians,<br \/>\nRemember, always the land remains.<\/p>\n<p>****<br \/>\nCopyright 2022 Arrias<br \/>\nwww.vicsocotra.com<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Editor&#8217;s Note: A trusted group of landed Latin American&#8217;s has arrived at Refuge Farm to commence work on the new screened-in front porch.
