\nAfter all they went to some Ivy League for their college degree.
\nThey\u2019ve worked for key Senators, on an election campaign,
\nTraveled in diplomatic circles, flew on the President\u2019s plane.<\/p>\n
They\u2019ve traveled all over the world, driven \u2018round in armored cars,
\nVisited 50 capitals, sipped Courvoisier in some private bars.
\nMaybe even got shot at once, before flying out of town,
\nThen drowned their fears in Maker\u2019s Mark, acted like a clown.<\/p>\n
They are the Best and Brightest, they\u2019ve no time for nitty-gritty,
\nToo busy doing important stuff, too busy being witty.
\nThey don\u2019t read the fine print, that\u2019s a task for some clerk,
\nDon\u2019t really know if their Rube Goldberg plan will really work.<\/p>\n
Not for them to actually understand what details really mean,
\nHow hard it is to change the course of these great machines.
\nWho cares the consequences, speaking ill formed thoughts out loud?
\nFrom their corner offices they roused a partisan crowd.<\/p>\n
But meanwhile as they say things that sound cool and tough,
\nPrivate Smith and Gunny Jones are living in the rough.
\nThey\u2019re the ones who catch it, when it hits the fan,
\nAnd then get told some losses are all part of the plan.<\/p>\n
And if things go really bad, the Best and Brightest will resign,
\nWrite a book, entertain elites, and drink only finest wine.
\nAs for the folks in that other world, where things hit the fan,
\nWell, they just need to suck it up, take it like a man\u2026<\/p>\n
After all, this is about the adults, who really are the best,
\nNot about the little people, who are all so poorly dressed.
\nYes, a war may start because of things they misunderstood,
\nBut what really matters is that they always look good.<\/p>\n
