Author\u2019s Note: Back in July when a cooling dusk started descending upon a small western North Carolina Main Street we were shopping, we spotted some cast iron pieces that rang certain bells. As the shop keeper started closing up, W asked to buy all of them and any others he might have had in the back.<\/p>\n

We came home with his total lot — 4 ravens.<\/p>\n

They were placed around our kitchen with three of them standing watch over a local Keys artist\u2019s watercolor of an island scene.<\/p>\n

While sipping morning coffee in the kitchen today, I looked at these birds while the living room TV softly blared the day\u2019s beltway and election news two rooms away.<\/p>\n

\nTV: 24\/7 doom, bad news and outrage<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ravens atop kitchen picture frame in the morning sideways light
\nBlack empty-eyed-ness against dawn\u2019s Kodachrome color bright
\nFillin’ up my head with dreams while living room TV drones a news monologue
\nThey\u2019re never gonna let us go
\nThey\u2019re still foot stomping about last year’s melted snow
\nIn their studios, like dried winds, like grey ghosts, like children, like bad dogs<\/p>\n

Now and then I try to hear what they say
\nI’m trying to hear, what do they say?
\nAnd every TV screen in this town has seen better days
\n\"\"
\nBirds on a watercolor<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our front door opens up at the bottom of the stairs
\nAnd all of that brutal winter air
\nSlides over the kitchen wine bar and onto the floor
\nThe sun just rose and now it’s setting
\nSome people here are long past forgetting
\nWhat it was that they came here lookin’ for<\/p>\n

And maybe they came just to get away
\nNow maybe now they gonna stay away
\nAnd every TV screen in this town has seen better days<\/p>\n

Hades went and made us eat them pomegranate seeds
\nAnd now we’s got them driving needs
\nTo run around town every time the nights get long
\nEnjoying elixir charms sitting in local bars in our Levi jeans
\nUntil we’re toasty in our early winter dreams
\nJust trying to get within earshot of some old song<\/p>\n

Oh, but it don\u2019t matter who says stay
\nWe gonna go, no matter who says stay
\nAnd every TV screen in this town has seen better days<\/p>\n

Sometimes out on the edge of town
\nWe unwind our hotrods\u2019 motors
\nTill we\u2019re so far out
\nWe see a million stars
\nAnd enjoy a dusk sea breeze
\nAnd the blazing moon and one lone palm tree
\nSuch beauty of our vast, empty, silent, late winter nights<\/p>\n

Well, we can sometimes feel our whole life fallin’ away
\nWe can sure feel our whole life fallin’ away
\nAnd every television screen in this town has seen better days
\nEvery screen in this town<\/p>\n
