<strong>Along the Marsh Edges of the Coastal Empire<\/strong><em>Coastal Empire<\/em><em> &nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/p18-mailws.icloud.com:443\/wm\/messagepart\/Screen%20Shot%202021-08-01%20at%2011.12.19%20%20AM.png?guid=messagepart%3AINBOX%2F27573-2&amp;type=image%2Fpng&amp;name=Screen+Shot+2021-08-01+at+11.12.19++AM.png&amp;size=1437742&amp;dsid=1736070733&amp;clientId=f1487529-7b9c-462c-a2e1-9b018ebfba35\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2021-08-01 at 11.12.19 AM.png\" title=\"Screen Shot 2021-08-01 at 11.12.19 AM.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0 To avoid the terrors of the night with its impenetrable shadows of darkness, we ended our back country motorcar adventuring in the Empire\u2019s marshlands during the plague well before the moon\u2019s rise and the sun\u2019s fall. \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not even powerful flashlights or our hotrods&#8217; high beams could tempt us to linger. \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tales of abandoned gothic looking Victorian era farmhouses, barns and businesses sometimes involved gypsies, glass eyes and witches.\u00a0\u00a0So, when we spotted a creepy looking place, we\u2019d slow our ride and U-turned to assume a vantage point for a better look at its dilapidation, broken windows and porch stairs, overgrown landscaping, and strangling vines.\u00a0\u00a0Some, if not many, of these locales seemed to have no mosquitoes or gnats which said to us they were so cursed that even these nastiest of nature\u2019s biters were scared off of these places. \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To us non-locals, it\u2019s uncommon if not rare knowledge that many of these towns of a certain size have these places and maybe a specter\u2019s tale or two.\u00a0\u00a0A select few of these abandoned places looked like they had in their bones a spell or curse or two that made the nearby land infertile or unfortunate animals\u2019 life short and painful for those who were unlucky enough to have gotten too close and stayed too long. \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At times some of these places repaid our curiosity with a brief glimpse of how we might die like old and a fall or sick after eating or drinking too much or something bad.\u00a0\u00a0It was right after these brief moments that you sensed these places were smiling at you to see if you\u2019d smile back at them. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> From these moments, our fear of death waned.\u00a0\u00a0And for that, it was as good as being immortal.\u00a0\u00a0We knew that everything else we\u2019d survive. \u00a0 We now knew the truer versions of things &#8212;
