Author’s note: We were lounging in a Charleston SC dive bar — the Commodore — on icy slick Meeting Street two Saturday nights ago, sad that this former jazz bar had morphed into a millenial 1970s music venue. This dilapidated place may not last long, since urban development of tony condos and apartment buildings was marching quickly northwards from the historic downtown of this paragon, New South city. We cheered ourselves as the band began to play funked up versions of that long ago music after repairing a smoking speaker amp that they had spectacularly fried during their sound checks. As the smoke cleared, the music began to blare and the young’uns began to groove as a group on the dance floor, potential coming times came into clearer focus.<\/p>\n
We were sitting in a dive bar
\nWhen the band started
\nOn Charleston’s Meeting Street.
\nUncertain but unafraid
\nOur hopes for soothing jazz expired.
\nWe nursed heavy pours of rye whiskey over ice
\nDeadening our unease for these low dishonest times:
\nAbsent were anger and fear
\nCirculating over distant
\nAnd darkened lands of Asia and
\nPossessing our private lives.
\nAn unhearable march of boots
\nMight offend this joyful January night.<\/p>\n
Simple wiki scholarship
\nUnearths the mistakes
\nFrom Bush Senior until now
\nThat have rendered America sightless
\nFinds what occurred at the DMZ and near shore seas:
\nPsychopathic Kims and the power mad Communist Chinese.
\nOur soldiers and the public may soon know
\nWhat all school children used to learn:
\nThose to whom evil is done
\nWill do unspeakable evil in return.<\/p>\n
Into this crisp winter night air
\nWhere charming downtown lofts
\nCozy, artful design declaims
\nThe desires of comfortable Free Men,
\nBelievin we can live forever
\nIn euphoric dreams.
\nIn the bar’s darkened restroom mirrors we might see, if we looked,
\nTotalitarianism’s ghostly faces staring back
\nAnd the coming international troubles
\nHalf a world away.<\/p>\n
Faces along the bar
\nFling their cares away
\nAs the lights never come on,
\nThe music always plays.
\nAll our networked inventions conspire
\nTo make we revelers assume
\nThe good future of our homeland
\nLest we should see where we are,
\nLost as the hunted in a dark woods.<\/p>\n
Tis true of our normal hearts
\nThe error was bred in the American bone
\nLike Jefferson, America’s men and women
\nCrave what we cannot have,
\nNot universal peace and love
\nBut just to be left alone.<\/p>\n
Sleepy under night skies
\nAmerica in stupor lies
\nUnseeing here and there
\nSmall red dots of light
\nDance about as events occur
\nPredisposed to ignore them
\nPerferring tales of gossip and lust
\nWe, beleaguered by our games
\nWhich turn our minds into mush,
\nFlit about their warm affirming flames.<\/p>\n
