Editor’s Note: Standard disclaimer: Marlow is a real person, and veers into poetry on occasion as he does this rainy morning. Me? I slogged through the taxes this morning and stabbed the button and sent them in. What an obtuse and frustrating system we have created. When I printed out a paper copy for the files, the mass came to around forty pages. This is absurd. Perhaps not as crazy as wanting to be Hollywood Famous, but you never know. Over to Marlow!<\/p>\n

Hollywood Famous
\nCoastal Empire<\/p>\n

Long ago I knew this neighborhood boy. He lived just down the street from me on West North Broadway just up from the Olentangy River. Both of us were the oldest of our seven child families, attended the same schools, rode the same buses and played at the same parks. He was a studious, quiet person. Almost twenty years ago, I read about him in the news. Yesterday, someone sent me digital press clippings that he had been in the news. He was once again Hollywood Famous.
\nThis prompted some free verse.
\nHollywood Famous<\/p>\n

he was five foot nine with dark brown hair
\ndeep set brown eyes
\nwith a wiry body
\nhe was quiet and rode an old used bicycle
\nto school and work
\nhe didn\u2019t go out with girls
\nhe didn\u2019t hang much with boys
\nhe\u2019d pull up on his bicycle
\nput his foot down on the ground at
\nthe park: \u201cHey. Marlow, where are you going to go
\nto college? You\u2019re smart. You\u2019ll get in anywhere.\u201d
\nHe was smarter than me so
\nI\u2019d say the same back to him but
\nhe\u2019d say right back to me or others who sometimes made fun of him
\n\u201ccollege is not for me. I\u2019m headed for Hollywood.
\nI\u2019m going to be famous.\u201d<\/p>\n

they never got to him in one way or
\nthe other.
\nthey did get to our school\u2019s assistant principal for girls just after we
\ngraduated, she left the nunnery, married a defrocked priest,
\nhad children and moved out west.<\/p>\n

in the class pictures of 1967, graduating class,
\nspring , Dante Soiu\u2019s photo was there on the same page
\nas mine and he looked very different than the rest of us.<\/p>\n

under each photo there was something unique
\nabout each student:
\n\u201cLoves baseball and canoeing the river . . .\u201d
\n\u201cEngaged to a student at OSU\u201d
\n\u201cWants to be a housewife and a mother . . .\u201d
\nunder Dante Soiu\u2019s photo it said:
\n\u201cGoing to be Hollywood famous . . .\u201d
\nDante Soiu of Watterson High
\nclass of 1967<\/p>\n

he should have changed his name
\nhe looked so deranged later
\nwith his beady eyes<\/p>\n

now he looks mildly off the hook
\nhe was born under a bad sign
\nScorpio, the predatory arachnid
\nriding his old
\nused bicycle.<\/p>\n
