the big cities we have left behind fatten, grow old,
\nincreasingly coarsen, they become poisoned,
\nand parts of them and their people wither<\/p>\n
survivors often think of the old days
\nwhen the nights and days jumped like they never had before
\nthat even when they slept they gave off light,
\nelectricity and soothing rollicking sounds
\nthey still feel awake but are not
\nthose days are gone<\/p>\n
they caused troubles in strange places,
\nlike drug store luncheon counters, bowling alleys, on streets
\nnamed Wall and Main, highways and other byways<\/p>\n
they were funny and strange, but they were
\nnot right
\nthey bamboozled the flyovers
\nsometimes they made them angry
\nbut they were never hard to get rid of
\n\u201cjust turn the damn thing off and don\u2019t read the papers\u201d<\/p>\n
after they fell, there was nothing<\/p>\n
all of them at first didn\u2019t realize it<\/p>\n
most of them still don\u2019t<\/p>\n
it will take them years to figure it out<\/p>\n
they weren\u2019t our beloveds just aberrations
\nwith the ability to exceed the limits
\nfor a brief while dressed in their polished shoes
\npressed shirts and store bought tans<\/p>\n
we are the unshaven with dirty nails, rumpled shirts, stained pants,
\nand sandy shoes<\/p>\n
when they left us high and dry, all our other things,
\ndays off, songs, meals, drinks, movies and books
\nseemed ordinary and worthless
\nwe thought they had brought us something special
\nbut we were wrong<\/p>\n
they tried to make us believe that living
\nwithout them would be horrid
\nbut we shall<\/p>\n
they will miss us more than we them<\/p>\n
