{"id":14789,"date":"2016-12-15T20:28:49","date_gmt":"2016-12-15T20:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicsocotra.com\/wordpress\/?p=14789"},"modified":"2016-12-15T20:28:49","modified_gmt":"2016-12-15T20:28:49","slug":"marlows-coastal-empire-christmas-tidbits-from-savannah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicsocotra.com\/wordpress\/marlows-coastal-empire-christmas-tidbits-from-savannah\/","title":{"rendered":"Marlow&#8217;s Coastal Empire: Christmas Tidbits from Savannah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14793\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicsocotra.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-15-at-11.14.54-AM-e1481833671794.png\" alt=\"screen-shot-2016-12-15-at-11-14-54-am\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the time James Oglethorpe and the original colonists arrived in 1733, the new colony of Georgia had plans of freedom for all, unless you were Catholic.\u00a0 Or a lawyer.\u00a0 Or if you drank.<\/p>\n<p>The first of these bans to be lifted was that of \u201cspirituous liquors\u201d in 1742.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly thereafter, relations between England and Spain temporarily improved with the Catholic ban lifted in 1748.<\/p>\n<p>Two short years later in 1750, Georgia abandoned the utopia ideal altogether and joined the other colonies in allowing slaves.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, the idea of a society in which inhabitants could settle disputes among themselves died with the rest of these bans.\u00a0 The ban on lawyers was lifted (or just ignored) in 1755.\u00a0\u00a0 Isn\u2019t it odd that the lawyer ban lasted the longest?<\/p>\n<p>Savannah was a Christmas gift to President Lincoln from General Sherman<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14794\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicsocotra.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/sherman.png\" alt=\"sherman\" width=\"300\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vicsocotra.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/sherman.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vicsocotra.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/sherman-236x300.png 236w, https:\/\/www.vicsocotra.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/sherman-221x281.png 221w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\nGeneral William T. Sherman<\/p>\n<p>Well, sort of.\u00a0 Toward the end of 1864, Savannah was one of the few remaining major ports under Confederate domain.\u00a0 After taking Atlanta, Union General William T. Sherman made his famous \u201cMarch to the Sea,\u201d burning everything in his path.\u00a0 Six weeks later, on December 22, 1864, Sherman wired the following message to President Abraham Lincoln: \u201cI beg to present you, as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah, with 150 heavy guns and plenty of ammunition, and also about 25,000 bales of cotton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14792\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicsocotra.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/jingle-bells.png\" alt=\"jingle-bells\" width=\"320\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vicsocotra.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/jingle-bells.png 320w, https:\/\/www.vicsocotra.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/jingle-bells-300x259.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><br \/>\n\u201cJingle Bells\u201d was reportedly written in Savannah<\/p>\n<p>At least the sign above says so.\u00a0 One of the most popular songs to sing during the Christmas season is believed to have been written in Savannah by James L.
