In the absence of the Two Sister\u2019s shade canopy this year, Marlow\u2019s mango crop this year is gargantuan. Branches on the mango tree in their side yard are so heavy with ripening fruit that they are bending straight down.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s crop is late. The past three years, they began to fully ripen by the end of the third week of May. At the end of the second week of June, they are still dark green. Last night in the evening air, the air was thick with the perfume juice from ripening fruit on the upper branches. It smelled divine.<\/p>\n
How we love the sweet, spherical summer fruit
\nOrange and oval shaped, dangling from trees to suit<\/p>\n
W says their tree now offers bounty galore
\nCome out and get them, we live by the shore
\nFive minutes later, a half-filled box of goodies
\nDo we have enough to share with our hoodies<\/p>\n
Anticipation of smiles and neighbors glee
\nThis wondrous surprise, I can’t wait for them to see<\/p>\n
They are patiently awaiting them, since the June summer sun is beating down on them as if it were late August. Temperatures are in the 90s almost every day. Summer is always near when there are mango cocktails and mango ice cream to be made and mango juice for breakfast.<\/p>\n
Marlow dwells on an island, fishing the web
\nAnd drinking mango cocktails each day
\nHe’s writing his memoirs before his mind loses its edge
\nDoesn’t care what most people say
\nThrough sixty-seven years of slow motion
\nIf he likes you he’ll smile then he’ll say
\nSport, some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic
\nBut he had a good life all the way<\/p>\n
He rolled with the punches
\nFinally learned to trust his hunches
\nMakin\u2019 the best of whatever came his way
\nForgot his blind ambition
\nLearned to trust his intuition
\nHeaded straight ahead come what may<\/p>\n
He\u2019s growing older but not up
\nHis metabolic rate is pleasantly stuck
\nLets the winds of time blow over his head
\nHe’d rather die while he\u2019s living than live while he\u2019s dead<\/p>\n
He\u2019s just an old dog in the corner recalling his youth
\nTelling stories and sharing the evenings at the end of it all
\nEvery tropical backwater has guys like these
\nDon\u2019t want to lose his life, just finish it with a breeze<\/p>\n

\n1.5 cups mango diced
\nPint glass filled with ice
\n2 ounces coconut rum
\nTsp fresh lime juice, if desired<\/p>\n
\nPour into pint glass
\nTop with tonic water
\nStir & Serve<\/p>\n
