The Human Condition

Corner bar, could be almost anywhere,
A hunter, denied the natural chance
To chase, and kill, and provide meat,
Hunts for money he put in his pants…

Rumsfeld’s Wisdom

There is what you know,
And what you don’t know,
Then there is what you do
Not know you don’t know…

Try as you might to learn,
The unknown may confuse
What you strive to discern…

Out Of Sight

Somewhere out in the desert
Where dead end trails lead
Dreambirds dance on rocks
Toad eats a centipede

Unrecalled

Calling on old memories, sometimes
They come, sometimes they don’t,
In certain special cases,
They simply won’t,
The images they carried,
From all the unremarkable
Days, remain buried…

Our Suburb

Windowed boxes of wood and brick,
Islands in oceans of short green grass,
Populated anonymously, with cars
Changing as the decades pass,
Silent, orderly, subdivided, subdued,
Tree-lined dream of the middle class…

Hugging A Tree

The bark is rough against my face
My arms, too short, to wrap around
The girth of the god of this forest place,
Me, a few decades’-worth of meat
And fat, the tree has seen hundreds
Of seasons, through cold and heat,
Twisted by winds, it has grown
Into a giant, and I, embrace its life,
Both of us breathing, and alone…

DMV Or Dentist’s Office

Staring at the coffee-table-book,
Tired, wrinkled magazines,
I sigh, and take another look,
At the plastic clock on the wall,
Of this waiting place, the
Clock hardly moves at all…

Walk Like A Japanese

Purposeful Japanese people walking,
Perfectionists in navy, black, and gray,
Each carrying the weight of their
Ancient tribe, in a Japanese way.
Diligent Japanese people talking,
In controlled and quiet tones,
All crowded on verdant islands,
Home to gods and ancestors’ bones.
Quiet Japanese people stalking,
In moments short and rare,
Happiness, hidden somewhere deep
In the conformity they share.

Bilateral Cooperation

Important senior officials
From Washington D.C.,
Fly thousands of miles,
To drink green tea,
Review important files,
And make proposals using
Their negotiating wiles,
With Japanese senior officials
Who say “No” with smiles…

Sophistry

That theoretical moment when
Irresistible meets immovable,
What is supposed to happen then?
Nuclear fusion, or back it all up,
Contrive the collision again…
